    Hiking

A narrow path starting at the parking lot of the Gambachs wastewater treatment plant leads to the spot where a lower jaw of a Mastodonsaurus was found. This find can be visited in Munich in the Bavarian State Collection of Paleontology.

The Mastodonsaurus is a genus of Temnospondyler amphibians from the Middle to Upper Triassic of Europe. This genus was one of the largest amphibians in the history of the earth, but was surpassed by Prionosuchus. Wikipedia

Exciting and worth knowing about the extraordinary geological conditions of the region, shows you the geological nature trail, on which one finds not only interesting facts about the Muschelkalk, but also about the here for the first time found two amphibian or dinosaur species "Mastodonsaurus ingens" and "Saurichnites gambachensis" ,

The geological nature trail on the Kalbenstein leads over 2.13 km and a difference in altitude of 130 m through geological outcrops of the TRIAS era, known throughout Germany, in which the red sandstone, shell limestone and keuper were formed from deposits. These rock formations shape our landscape in Franconia today.
The nature trail can be easily reached via the B26. A few meters after the descent to Gambach there is a small stone bridge on the right, which leads to a parking lot and the entrance to the nature trail.
