Pronounced 'Critch', Cruit Island/An Chruit is accessible via a bridge built during World War Two. An Chruit means 'little hillock' or 'the hump' but it also mean 'harp' in old Irish. Take a look at the map and see which one you think it refers to. It is a stunning place with views in every direction.

A wonderful little island connected to the mainland by an arched bridge. In summer, when the tide is high, there are always a few brave and cold-hearted people who jump from the bridge into the water, which is great (and safe) fun. There is only one single-lane road with passing lanes across the island, and roughly halfway there is a small collection of thatched holiday homes on naturally polished rocks that are beautifully rustic (including open peat fireplaces) (DonegalThatchCottages). Below the houses there is a beautiful sandy beach and on the opposite side of the road a small pier where you can swim in the morning. We spent two summers here and enjoyed it very much. If you continue to wander around the island, you will find small sandy bays where you can shop and swim (with a wetsuit). We were once lucky enough to be able to watch a group of dolphins right in front of us, their members performing elegant leaps into the air. A magical Irish experience.
