Port Ghalib is not an old, established city, but a luxury resort town artificially created from the desert floor on the Red Sea. Kuwaiti billionaire Nasser El Kharafi invested around two billion US dollars from the late 1990s and 2000s to transform the previously completely uninhabited desert area, 65 kilometers north of Marsa Alam, into an exclusive tourist and yacht harbor paradise.

Previous state: The area was originally called Ras Ghalib and was a lonely stretch of coast without infrastructure.
The name: "Ghalib" means "the victor" in Arabic. The name of the cape or natural harbor already existed before the major project.
Opening: From around 2007, the mega-project officially appeared on the tourist map.
