The church was founded in 1189 by Friedrich I "Barbarossa" as a hospital church and in 1208 it was elevated to the status of a parish church by the Bishop of Strasbourg, Heinrich II von Veringen. Construction of the present Gothic building began in 1289 and was extended to the east in the 15th century. The church suffered considerable damage during World War II, but was fundamentally restored from 1965 onwards.
