The town hall was built on the harbor during the city's heyday. A prestigious facade was added in 1599. The rear of the building dates from the fifteenth century, the front from the sixteenth century. The rear facade was likely the front in the early days. The former tower has disappeared.
In 1890-1891, the town hall was completely rebuilt and all the sculptures were replaced. A statue of Mercy was placed on the facade. The original vases are in the Zeeuws Museum in Middelburg.
