Haines Junction is located in the wide valley of the 'Dezadeash River', which flows west of the town in the St. Elias Mountains with the 'Kaskawulsh River' and flows into the Pacific as the 'Alsek River' in Alaska.

The town of Haines Junction was created in 1942 during the construction of the Alaska Highway at the junction with the Haines Highway. Southern Tutchone - First Nation People had used the area as a summer camp for around two thousand years. Haines Junction is the access point to Kluane National Park and Reserve. The village is home to the 'Kluane National Park and Reserve Visitor Centre' and the 'Da Kų Cultural Centre', the 'Champagne & Aishihik First Nations Peoples'
