The lion group was created between 1892 and 1897 for the monument to Wilhelm I based on a design by Reinhold Begas. The artists were August Gaul and August Kraus. The lions were cast in the Gladenbeck foundry. They were dismantled from their original location in 1950 and have been at their current location in the zoo since 1963.
