Europe's pepper trade with India began with the discovery of the sea route by Vasco da Gama in 1498. The Suez Canal did not yet exist, the dangerous route ran around the southern tip of Africa, the Cape of Good Hope. Ships often went missing, a tremendous loss of life, ship and valuable cargo of pepper and other exotic spices.
In 1680, Johann Anton Kaufmann, then a tradesman in Salzburg, bought a ship that was long overdue. He prayed to St. Anthony - and lo and behold, the ship entered Venice. He was now a rich man, bought the Söllheim estate, expanded it into today's baroque palace and built a chapel next to St. Anthony. The pastor lived in the house next to the chapel, today's Restaurant Pfefferschiff.

The highlight is not far from the Ischlerbahn route.
