The Flåmselve has its source at Myrdal and flows through Kjosfossen into Flåmsdalen. Flåmsdalen is narrow and the river flows through a series of waterfalls with rapids in between. The river flows into the innermost part of the Aurlandsfjord at the town of Flåm. The Flåmsbana runs along the river from Myrdal to the fjord.

In 1986 the river was placed under protection so that it cannot be regulated or used to generate electricity.
