The orphanage of Aardenburg was located at Weststraat 22 from 1674 to 1929. At the rear of the house you can clearly see that the two houses on either side were originally built as one building in 1631. It probably served as a large captain's house. Later the building became a poorhouse until the civilian orphanage, called the Meiboom, was founded on that spot in 1674. The orphanage was closed several times due to lack of money and finally closed permanently. Since 1929, the Management Committee has taken care of the Meiboom, the middle house. There is a special regent's room in Neo-Renaissance style.
