Traces of Mesolithic hunters from the 7th millennium BC can be found on the mountain. Peasant settlements are tangible from the Neolithic Age (3rd millennium BC). The following Bronze Age culture is seen in connection with the Frög burial ground. The first people known by name to settle here were the Celts. Artifacts from Roman times indicate the presence of the Mithraic cult. During the migration of peoples, the lofty mountain was used as a place of refuge. A first church from the 5./6. Century could be archaeologically secured.

The 772-meter-high Kathreinkogel, located between the Drava River and the western bay of Lake Wörthersee, stands out prominently from the valley floor. It has been inhabited since the 7th millennium BC. Surface finds indicate that Mesolithic hunter-gatherers (7th/6th millennium BC) and Neolithic farmers (3rd millennium BC) already used the mountain as a settlement.
