Tunnel Road offers a moderate jogging experience that blends history with stunning natural scenery. As you follow the historic Midland Railroad grade, you will pass through several short, one-lane railroad tunnels, a unique landmark along the way. This 8.4-mile (13.5 km) route features 262 feet (80 metres) of elevation gain and typically takes about 1 hour and 23 minutes to complete, providing excellent viewpoints of the Arkansas River's whitewater rapids and the majestic Collegiate Peaks, including Mt. Princeton and Mt. Yale, as you jog through piñon pines.
This trail is open year-round, making it a reliable option for your jogging routine in any season. You do not need to pay any fees for access to the route itself. While the trail is largely unsupervised, you can find pit toilets at the Railroad Bridge Recreation Site, which is located about 6.8 miles into the journey. This site is a day-use fee area, so plan accordingly if you intend to use its facilities.
What makes Tunnel Road particularly special is its connection to the past, tracing the path of the old Midland Railroad. This historical context, combined with the distinctive railroad tunnels and the panoramic views of the Collegiate Peaks, sets it apart as a notable jogging destination. It provides a scenic and engaging way to experience the area's natural beauty and heritage.
