This rare rock formation was uncovered during the construction of the railway at the end of the 19th century. It is of course not a petrified snake, as originally thought.

The formation is about 380 million years old landslides of clay packs. Rivers had carried the clay material in layers into the shallow Devonian sea, where it was not yet firmly bonded to the subsoil. It slid down the slope in the depths of the sea, throwing bulges along the way. A knee-high stocking that has slipped over the ankles can serve as a clear comparison. Later the depositional material solidified and the ridges petrified and have been preserved to this day. The Trier hikers, who had already got to know the Red Spring, the Wildstein and the "Trarbacher Schweiz" last year, were there when the display board with information about the "Reiler Schlange" was set up in the presence of the Reiler mayor Artur Greis.
