At the end of the 13th century, the booming iron industry gradually spread along the banks of the Hoëgne. Furnaces, forges, foundries and turntables were built along the river from Solwaster to Polleur. At the end of the 15th century there were seventeen businesses there. To activate these, charcoal was used... It can therefore be assumed that in the heart of the forest, in a cleared clearing, charcoal burners built their huts... this is probably the origin of Solwaster. For some, the village's name derives from a "ster" (originally uncultivated land) where rye was grown ("wassin" in Walloon). For others, the name is of Germanic origin, in German "Wasser" means water. For still others, "Solwa" would be a surname, such as Pepinster, Jehanster, ...!
