The first mention of Bytów comes from 1336. At that time, Louis the Elder, Margrave of Brandenburg, allowed the Guntersbergs to build a castle in Bytów. In the years 1411-1414, during the Polish-Teutonic war, the town was destroyed by the Pomeranians. In 1489 it belonged to Hans von Guntersberg.

In 1598, Bytowo belonged to the von Brok family from Złocieniec. In 1828, the owner was cavalry captain von Derenthal. From 1841, the property belonged to the von Eichholz family. Subsequently, from 1846 to the von Wilisens, from 1847 to the castle preacher Stubernauch from Schwedt, from 1855 to Herman von Knesebeck. At the beginning of the 20th century, Bytów was owned by General of Cavalry Baron von Vietinghoff. The last owner of the estate, until 1945, was Georg Blume.

The palace in Bytów was built around 1870 for the John family. Rebuilt around 1900. It was destroyed in 1945. The current owner is rebuilding the palace from ruins. The residence had been abandoned since 1975. “At the time of purchase by the current owners, there were only heavily weakened perimeter walls of the palace with fragmentary preserved architectural decor and a rubbled interior. Within two years (2013–2015), the perimeter walls were rebuilt and plastered, new ceilings were made, and the body and the tower were covered with a roof. On the front façade, the existing and damaged architectural detail was restored according to the previously inventoried originals from the other façades.
