Walking along the square on June 4, 1989 towards the center of Toruń, the first building that draws our attention is the historic neo-Gothic building of the City Hall in Toruń, which was erected in the years 1899-1901 and was then the seat of the District Office (Kreishaus).

After regaining independence in 1920, the building did not change its character and was still the seat of the poviat authorities, this time of the Polish administration, and it served this function until 1939.

From 1945 to 1975, it housed the Poviat National Council in Toruń.

Currently, it is the seat of the local government of Toruń.
