Of the original (1180) chapel dedicated to Thomas Becket, only the chancel and transept in early English style survived the Civil War. Around 1690 the nave and the tower were raised. In 1703 an octagonal wooden chapel was added: a landmark for shipping. The aisle of the chancel houses the tomb of the Duke of Buckingham, who was murdered in 1628. Dekerk received cathedral status in 1927 and was further expanded in 1938-1939

The patronage of this church – dedicated to Saint Thomas of Canterbury – takes us back in time to the 12th century, but geographically we remain in southeastern England. Thomas Becket (born 1118) was Archbishop of Canterbury and, in the dispute between the Church and the Crown (King Henry II), a "martyr of canon law and ecclesiastical freedom," as Pope Alexander III put it on the occasion of his canonization (1173, just three years after Thomas's violent death). His feast day in the calendar of saints is December 29th.

Canterbury Cathedral, where he was murdered in 1170 and which houses his tomb, can be visited virtually in the komoot system at the following link =>> komoot.com/de-de/highlight/231266
