The Sile is a river about 90 kilometers long, which is fed by several springs from the provinces of Treviso and Padua. In 1683, the Serenissima (historical name of the Republic of Venice) decided to prevent the Sile from burying the lagoon and diverted it to the bed of the ancient Piave river. That's why the name Piave Vecchia (old Piave) exists for the Sile for the last piece and that's where the actual name of the lighthouse comes from.
