The city, founded by Aryan traders from Phocaea, was surrounded by three fortification walls (850 meters in total) with several city gates, and stretched over an area of 4 hectares. If you take a closer look, you can still see the remains of these fortification walls, which date back to the 4th century BC and are listed monuments.
In the Middle Ages, Bishop Guillaume had the city wall, which is still intact today, built to protect the city. In parts it follows the course of the ancient wall. A coat of arms is carved halfway up, on which 4 waves can be seen. It comes from the Protestants who took the city in 1560.
