The characteristic beacon is located on the right bank of the IJzer, in the middle of the nature reserve De IJzermonding. The Lighthouse is a familiar sight for those sailing or returning from sea.
In a succession of four lighthouses, the current one is the most recent beacon for shipping traffic to and from the port of Nieuwpoort. The three predecessors, including the medieval Vierboete, were all lost in the violence of war during the first half of the 20th century.translated by
