The connection was opened on November 25, 1897 by the Prussian State Railways. The railway line has not been used by passengers since May 30, 1999. It is still used to transport coal from the lignite mining area Profen von Wahlitz to Korbetha for the Schkopau power plant. The section from Deuben to Wahlitz was closed on January 1, 2002.
