The Atlantic Road

The road follows a route originally planned for a railway line. The first plans go back to the beginning of the 20th century; In 1935, however, these plans were finally shelved. Road planning began in the 1970s.
Construction began on August 1, 1983; the road opened on July 7, 1989, replacing a ferry service that ran on a similar route.
