The Vennquerbahn branched off in Jünkerath to the north-west from the Eifelbahn in the direction of Belgium and merged into the Vennbahn at Weywertz. In the end it was a single-track, non-electrified branch line. It is often also attributed to the continuing route of the Vennbahn system via Malmedy to Stavelot.

The railway line was planned as early as 1904, primarily for strategic reasons as an extension of the Dümpelfeld–Hillesheim–Lissendorf railway line with a connection to the Vennbahn line. The double-track branch line Dümpelfeld-Jünkerath-Weywertz was officially opened on July 1, 1912.

With the Treaty of Versailles, the Eupen-Malmedy region had to be ceded to Belgium. The Vennquerbahn was now under the control of the Belgian State Railways from Weywertz to Losheimergraben (border). The Losheim–Jünkerath section (Kylltalbahn) remained with the Prussian State Railways. The second track was dismantled in 1930 under pressure from the Belgian side and simplified branch line operations were introduced in the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR) area.

Passenger services were discontinued in 1963 and goods traffic in 1981.

On June 15, 2003, the final decommissioning took place and in late autumn 2004 the tracks were dismantled surprisingly quickly.

Very scenic route. As it is a former railway line, there are no steep inclines.
