In 1782 the foundation stone for an archive building for the Reich Chamber Court was laid here. The building was still unfinished when the court was dissolved in 1806.

In 1852 the district court, later the district court, was moved to the now completed building. From 1911 to 1996 the building was the town hall of the city of Wetzlar.

Today the registry office, the sponsorship for the East German Song and the historical archive of the city of Wetzlar are housed here.
