It is considered to be the most important altar carving in Lower Austria in terms of art history - the Gothic carved altar in the Mauer parish and pilgrimage church. But its history is full of gaps and mysteries that will probably never be solved.

The altar, which was created around 1510, is not found today in the east-facing apse of the church as usual, but immediately after the entrance on the left, on the north wall. "This probably stems from the Baroque period of art, when everything Gothic was literally pushed aside and replaced by something new," explains the parish priest of Mauer, Father Benno Maier.

The wooden winged altar with its over 50 carved figures shows Mary with child and saints in the middle section, and the side wings depict scenes from the life of Mary, such as the Annunciation, the Visitation and the birth of Christ. At the top, the cross of Christ rises up into the "church sky".
