The city is a Roman creation following the conquest of Caesar and, more particularly, the famous battle won in 56 BC. AD by Quintus Titurius Sabinus on Viridovix, Gallic chief at the head of the coalition of Celtic tribes of Armorica. Some historians believe that this famous battle took place in the commune of Petit-Celland. Excavations of the oppidum in 1938 and 1939 by Sir Mortimer Wheeler, a famous British archaeologist, provided proof of a Gallic occupation of the site and of a fire which caused its abandonment. This Iron Age fortification was surrounded by a Gallic wall.
