Hiking Highlight

It is exciting to walk or climb the lower path. But only from here can you see the highlights of the cliff. It's great that the path is not closed yet.😉

Easily accessible by bike or car, and there's also space for camper vans. A lovely walk can be made from the parking lot. For those with limited mobility, the walk is only possible above the cliff; otherwise, a nice short walk can be enjoyed along a narrow path.

Deep in the heart of Saaremaa, in the municipality of Muhu, the Üügu pank, also known as Anduvälja pank, stretches majestically. This geological wonderland stretches over an impressive 300 meters and is part of the protected area of the Üügu Landscape Park.In addition to its sublime beauty, Üügu pank also hides mysterious corners: at its heart is the holy spring of Silmaallikas, whose clear water was considered a blessing and medicine in ancient times. However, you have to be careful, because hidden deep in the cliffs is the “Soku tuba” cave, which is considered at risk of collapse due to erosion and decay.A particularly fascinating detail: In 1968, the artist Alfred Kongo captured the raw beauty of Üügu pank in an oil painting entitled "Motif from below of Üügu pank". This work of art testifies to the unmistakable atmosphere and the timeless fascination that this place radiates. The geological composition of the cliff is a window into bygone geological eras. The spectrum of rock layers ranges from thin layers of layered dolomitic rock to medium-sized layers with pyrite and clay inclusions to a light gray medium-sized dolomite with clay particles. Some geologists even believe that the lowest part of the cliff may be made of domerite.A walk along the Üügu pank is not only a hike through breathtaking nature, but also a journey through time. Every step, every look into the depths or along the grass swaying in the wind on the edge of the cliff allows the hiker to immerse himself in a world that is shaped by both Estonia's geological history and its myths and legends. An unforgettable experience for every nature lover and history buff.
