The mosaic was presented as part of the 50th anniversary of the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award. The award is a non-formal education framework that challenges young people to volunteer, develop new skills, be active in sports and on expeditions to strengthen collaboration, resilience and enjoyment of the great outdoors.
It is not an organisation, but is used independently in their work by institutions such as schools, homes, youth groups and companies that are responsible for young people. The basis for the activities of the participants are the local opportunities that are networked for the program.
The program was founded in 1956 by HRH Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, in association with German educator Kurt Hahn. Currently more than one million young people complete their personal awards program each year.
According to the sponsoring association, over 8 million young people from more than 140 countries have taken part in The Duke of Edinburgh's Awards program to date.
