When there was still no radio and no telephone, cannons banged in the former garrison town of Stade to warn the population of storm surges. To commemorate these historic moments, Dieter Kunze (78), a respected volunteer who is well-known for his commitment in his home town of Stade, is now campaigning for the Schwedenspeicher to be marked with storm surge stamps. A suitable place: in front of today's Schwedenspeicher Museum between the old and new harbors are the flood cannons, which are much admired by tourists and often photographed.

There is already a tide mark as a sign at the supply station for sailors at the Stade city harbour. There the storm surge of February 17, 1962 with a water level of 5.70 meters above sea level is remembered. A house wall at the local history museum at the harbor in the Kehdingen village of Assel was also provided with a distinctive storm surge gauge to commemorate the devastating natural disasters of 1962 and 1976 with the water level and year. The flood marks also automatically bring to mind the other flood events that have hit the towns and villages on the Elbe several times over the past centuries.

As early as the 18th century, flood cannons were used to warn of floods. In 1962 they were fired for the last time during the great storm surge. Three flood cannons have been preserved to this day and are located next to the tourist information at the port. While they can no longer fire cannons, they are still impressive.
