On May 31, 1231, so the legend goes, all three castles were set on fire by ball lightning. Putting out the fire was out of the question, since none of the »Three Equals« had a well. It can be assumed that as a result Count Meinhard III. had the well named after him built. The fountain was first mentioned in 1367.

The Meinhard fountain was completely filled in by 2001. It is not known when the fountain was filled in or for what reason. There were also speculations about a connection between Mühlburg and Mühlberg through a passage that allegedly ended in the fountain. These uncertainties were cleared up when the fountain was excavated between 2001 and 2004: the suspected opening of a passage was not found, and it is actually a fountain.
