    Colorful dungeon Lieberhausen

A colorful church (also incorrectly called Bonte Kerke, but the word "bont" for colorful does not exist in the Oberberg language varieties) describes a church with medieval ceiling paintings, as can be found in Germany, especially in Oberberg in North Rhine-Westphalia. The term was originally only used for the "Bunte Kerke" in Lieberhausen, but is now also used as a collective term for all churches with similar ceiling paintings.

The Lieberhausen church was built in the 11th century. She became known for her ceiling paintings. The late Romanesque three-nave pillar basilica was first mentioned in 1174; At that time she was liable to pay tithes to the Severinsstift in Cologne. After the transept and chancel were renewed in the 15th century, painting began on the interior of the church. After the introduction of the Reformation in 1586, paintings were repaired and supplemented for the first time from 1589. It is considered unique in the Rhineland that here in Lieberhausen, pre- and post-Reformation paintings can be viewed side by side. In the 19th century the paintings were whitewashed, but restored in 1911-1913 and 1954.

    Müllenbach (12th century)

→ Main article: Evangelical Church (Müllenbach)

The Romanesque, three-aisled pillar basilica in Marienheide-Müllenbach was built in the 12th century as a fortified church and is considered a cultural and historical treasure. It has been almost completely preserved in its original form. Some wall paintings from the 14th century have been uncovered again.

    Marienhagen (around 1300)

The church in Marienhagen dates from around 1300 and features frescoes from the 14th century. The focal points of the depiction are the coronation of Mary, the adoration of the Three Kings and the apostles with the gospel symbols.

    Marienberghausen (13th to 15th centuries)

It was not until 1910 that extensive late Gothic wall and vault paintings were found in the Romanesque village church of Nümbrecht-Marienberghausen. They show, among other things, the Last Judgement, the Annunciation, St George fighting the dragon and the temptation of St Anthony.

    Wiedenest (Cross Church, 12th century)

In the Wiedenest Church, a former pilgrimage church, wall paintings were discovered during restoration work in 1963, which are among the most extensive late Gothic church paintings.
