Johann Adam Hasenstab was born on September 21, 1716 in Rothenbuch, the grandson of a hunter. In his youth he was a hunter's assistant in the Kurmainz High Spessart, the extensive hunting ground of the electoral archbishops of Mainz. But he had to resign when his poaching became known. The poacher Hasenstab then lived for years in the Spessart and in the lower Tauber Valley.
In 1749 the Mainz court councilor declared him outlawed and offered a bounty of 30 Reichstaler.
On June 3, 1773, Johann Sator, a district huntsman from Mainz, shot Johann Adam Hasenstab at the age of 57.

The Hasenstabkreuz monument commemorates the poacher Johann Adam Hasenstab. This wreaked havoc in the Spessart in the second half of the 18th century. Pursued by the forestry officials, he was always able to escape by crossing the state borders (Mainz-Wertheim-Würzburg).
