While the upper course is very natural, the estuary in the community of Braunau was regulated after devastating flood damage at the end of the 19th century. The estuary was relocated and the course of the river straightened over a length of six kilometers and fortified like a canal.
The river otters, crayfish and common river mussels are native to the Mattig and Schwemmbach rivers. (Wikipedia)

Austria's largest hedge maze was opened on the Mattigtal cycle path R24 in June 2016. All you have to do is drive about 300m to the west at the Mattig Bridge in the town of Reichsdorf (i.e. between Mauerkirchen and Uttendorf) on the freight road towards Kronleiten.
The Mattigtaler Hedge Labyrinth of Human Rights (MHM) is freely accessible from Easter to All Saints Day. The complex itself has an area of around 3,000 square meters and the path from the entrance to the center is quickly covered at around 760m. There are shady rest areas along the way.
