The factory complex of the former 'Roeloff's desteaming facility, steam dyeing and chemical laundry NV' on the Mathenesserdijk in Delfshaven has been completed in various construction phases. Roeloff's established itself at the location in 1892, and the factory was expanded significantly from 1926 onwards. The factory is part of historic Delfshaven, which was designated as a Protected Cityscape in 1991. The factory complex with its chimney is a defining element on the Schie, prominently visible from the Lage Erfbrug.
The Delfshaven Factory is one of the most striking factory buildings in Rotterdam and has been transformed since 2011 into a collective building for small companies, independent entrepreneurs and idiosyncratic freelancers. De Fabriek opened its new doors at the end of 2012.

The Factory is one of those buildings where you wish the walls could speak, its history is so rich. In 120 years it transformed from a 'steam facility' (laundry and dye house) into a squat and cultural breeding ground. What was known for years as 'that dilapidated factory' on the Mathenesserdijk has been the eye-catcher of the Delfshaven district since October 2012. The original building has remained standing, but has been completely renovated and transformed into an innovative collective building for small entrepreneurs.
