The Wetterbach valley near Holzhausen stretches right on the border with Hesse in the southernmost part of the Siegen-Wittgenstein district. The wide flood plain comes into its own thanks to the extensive meadows and pastures and is a special feature in the heavily wooded Siegerland.
The area is particularly important for meadow breeders: birds that have disappeared in many places from modern agricultural landscapes due to the lack of flowers and insects. Among them is the whinchat, which forms one of the last large populations in the whole of NRW in the Burbach area. It shares its habitat with the equally endangered meadow pipit and corncrake, which are also characteristic species of open landscapes.
Magnificently flowering perennials such as the globe flower, blue monkshood and medicinal ziest thrive in the Wetterbachtal. The colorful splendor attracts rare moths such as the ducat fire butterfly, the brown-spotted fritillary or the dusky blue.
Sometimes even the black stork and the red kite circle above the valley. They nest in the surrounding forests, but find lush hunting grounds here.

The approximately 88.4 ha large area was placed under nature protection in 2002 under the code number SI-052. The protection goal is the preservation and development of a large grassland complex consisting of extensively used wet, damp and poor meadows as a habitat for endangered animal and plant species, in particular for the currently largest whinchat population in North Rhine-Westphalia.
