“The fountain is named after the Maikammer citizen Johann Schwanz. He donated the fountain. The PWV found the source and contributed the stone with the commemorative inscription. [...] The Johannes fountain is said to have provided water for people and livestock who went about their work in the forest. The path at the Johannes fountain leads from the Totenkopf to the Heldenstein forester's lodge and was used by wooden carts.
The fountain is in a small complex with a wayside cross, two benches and (since 2020) a table.
The inscription reads: 'Johannes Fountain / Built in 1911 by / Johann Schwanz II / Maikaṁmer'
A palm branch is carved next to the inscription. The palm branch is considered a symbol of eternal life. [...] The fountain is popularly called 'Stachelsbrunnen'. [The spelling 'Stachelbrunnen' can also be found on signposts.]
Johann Scheck (September 21, 1840 - March 6, 1915) was a cooper and landowner. [...] The Steck family provided mayors and court judges in Maikammer several times (Leonhardt 1928). The information on the fountain 'Johann II' serves to distinguish it from Johann Adam Schwanz I (August 1, 1812 - December 28, 1880), the father of the fountain's founder.
Bahnhofstrasse 40 still houses a winery owned by the Schwanz family, direct descendants of the fountain founder.”
