I've always wondered who threw those boulders into the forest. In the small museum in Collenberg (buntsandstein.de) I finally found out what this phenomenon is all about:
It is rock sandstone, its binder is quartz, which is why it is very hard. Softer sandstones have e.g. clays and iron oxides as binders. The hard rock sandstone is very resistant to weathering. As a result, during the Pleistocene, it accumulated at the surface in the form of block fields (blocks are large chunks of rock). Softer rocks, on the other hand, weathered and were eroded. Block fields occur, for example, on the mountain slopes between Collenberg and Großheubach and near Faulbach.
