Top cycling routes to Stolper Tower (Grützpott)

Tips

  • The so-called Grützpott (Grützpott) is visible from afar. There are two paths to the top: the shorter one involves small, irregular steps, and the longer one is accessible by bike or car. The terrain itself is quite uneven, but the view is wonderful to enjoy. Various benches invite you to linger. The tower castle itself can be visited on certain days. It houses an exhibition.

  • Stolper Tower "Grützpott"
From the castle hill, on which the Stolper Tower is located, you can enjoy a wide view of the Lower Oder Valley. The terrain spur was from 7.-12. Settled by Slavs for centuries.
When in the last quarter of the 12th century the Danish king Waldemar temporarily took possession of the territory of the Brandenburg margraves, a new castle was built here in the middle of the old Slavic ramparts.
The Stolper Turm is one of the rare tower castles in northern Germany. The castle itself was the inhabited tower. Surrounded by a ring wall made of field stones, it offered at best space for a modest gate or stable building.
According to an old legend, the Stolper Tower is also known as the "Grützpott".
Today the tower is one of the thickest in Germany. Especially popular at Easter:
the traditional egg roll from the mountain.
    Dimensions:
    Outer diameter 18 m
    Height approx. 28 m
    Wall thickness below 6 m, above 4 m
    Opening times: April - October

    The Grützpott legend
Many centuries ago, according to the legend, the robber baron Tiloff lived in the castle. He primarily targeted merchants who roamed his territory. One day he had spied on a merchant from Silesia who was carrying a full bag of money. As the merchant rode through the Stolper Forest, the knight attacked him with his sword drawn. But the merchant already had a pistol loaded with a silver button from his wife's dress. The button pierced the knight's heart and he fell dead from his horse. Horrified, his squires fled to the castle.
News of the hated Tiloff's death soon spread to the surrounding villages, and the peasants ganged up to destroy the hated castle. They soon took the castle, but the keep was still there. The defenders threw everything they could at the strikers from above. When they had nothing left to throw, they threw their ready-made lunch, a thick gruel, at the besiegers. This pulp fell straight onto the balaclava of the stumbling blacksmith, who was standing on the top rung of the ladder. With the words "Den Grützpott war'n wi soon utschüren", he smashed the plank door to the tower with an iron bar. That was the end of the robbery nest. The walls were razed, the thick tower, the Grützpott, was left standing as a reminder.Source: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burg_Stolpe
