Kaunas is located at the confluence of the Neris and Memel (Lithuanian Nemunas) and about 100 km west of the Lithuanian capital Vilnius near the geographical center of the country in the Central Lithuanian Lowlands. The Neman has been dammed above the city to form the Kaunas Sea since 1959. To the west of the city is Lampėdis, an approximately 125-hectare lake north of the Neman that was created from a flooded gravel pit and is used as a local recreation area (Wikipedia).
