Günter Grass's most famous sculpture is the more than two-meter-high work Flounder in a Grip, created from a smaller clay model (approx. 52 cm) from 1982.A right hand stretched upwards holds a flounder in the air. The flatfish is one of the central motifs of Günter Grass's artistic work and, not least, the main character in his novel of the same name, published in 1977.In the Low German fairy tale "Von dem Fischer un syner Fru", the flounder grants a fisherman and his wife their wishes out of gratitude until they become more and more excessive and in the end the two lose all their previous achievements. In this way, the flounder admonishes people to be humble in order to keep the world worth living in.The sculpture in the courtyard of the Günter Grass House is one of several casts and versions. It was installed in 2002 for the opening of the exhibition house. Others are in Behlendorf, the artist's last place of residence, in Göttingen and in Sonderborg. sh-kunst.de/guenter-grass-butt-im-griff
