The history of the mill dates back to 1348 when the mill belonged to the fief of the lords of Valkenburg, who were also lords of Sittard. Later the mill came into the possession of the dukes of Gulik. These gentlemen practiced mill ban law in Sittard. The first mention is in a deed dated June 10, 1406. At that time, the mill was a grain mill that belonged to the Ophovenerhof opposite. Later the mill was used as an oil mill. In 1479, the Bornse fiefdom was elevated by Cornelis van Guttecoven, who sold the mill to Joghan van Guttecoven, who also raised the mill and resold it to Count Vincentius van Meurs en Sarwerden, after which a number of fiefs within the Bornse Mankamer followed, the last on October 17, 1624.
In the sixteenth century, the Ophovenerhof and the mill came under the management of the van Dobbelstein family. From 1627 onwards, the mill was leased by the duke's stewards.
