The widow Mechteld ten Ham lived at the beginning of the
17th century in the Hofstraat in 's-Heerenberg
Her husband was a town crier on the other side of the
street. Loveless fellow citizens accused her of
witchcraft. At her own request, a trial was held
that led to the witch trial in the Laak near Azewijn
She kept driving and that sealed her sentence
Her life came to a gruesome end at the stake
on 25 July 1605.
The statue of Mechteld ten Ham was donated in April 2004 by
three foundations on the occasion of the
625-year-old city rights of 's-Heerenberg
