The town of Kaltennordheim, 460 m above sea level, is the seat of the administrative community "Oberes Feldatal". Worth seeing are the former Merlinsburg with the local museum and the museum barn, the 500-year-old official linden tree in the castle courtyard, the town hall and the two churches. Since 1563, Kaltennordheim has hosted an annual At Pentecost the "marriage market" takes place. The marriage market was originally a farmer's market, which developed into a folk festival in the 19th century. Today the marriage market is the largest and most famous folk festival in the Thuringian Rhön.
Kaltennordheim was also the end point of the Dorndorf - Kaltennordheim railway line. It went into operation in 1880 as a narrow-gauge line. Due to potash mining, the line was converted to standard gauge in 1906. Due to the reunification, freight traffic fell sharply, so that it was discontinued in 1994. Passenger traffic ended in 1997. After a few special trains ran, the line was finally shut down in 2003.
A cycle path has been created on the railway line.
