    In the years 1869 to 1879, the Catholic community in Zweibrücken had a neo-Gothic hall church with a low crossing tower and a free-standing bell tower built according to plans by Franz Jakob Schmitt.
    This church building was not spared during the bombing on Black Wednesday, as the day on which the old town of Zweibrücken was reduced to rubble and ash was called. Part of the building was badly damaged by a bomb that fell on the roof and pierced it. Unfortunately, the rest of the church was demolished after the war, although according to many citizens of Zweibrücken it could have been rebuilt.
    In 1949 the construction of the flat-roofed pillar hall, which was reopened on September 17, 1950, began at the same location based on the designs of Albert Boßlet. Nine years after the completion of the new Holy Cross Church, the
    free-standing bell tower with a pyramidal roof.
