Vinland Estate was constructed in 1882 on Ochre Point by Peabody & Stearns for tobacco heiress Catharine Lorillard Wolfe. This estate is an excellent example of Romanesque Revival architecture; adorned with red sandstone and Aesthetic Movement style elements, Wolfe was inspired by Longfellow's "The Skeleton in Armor." The massive estate was later donated to Salve Regina University in 1955. Today, several buildings, including McAuley Hall and Angelus Hall, comprise the estate, serving as classrooms and offices for the university, preserving its rich legacy.
