The Mediterranean salt marsh is the only salt marsh in Slovenia and one of the few on the eastern Adriatic coast. This unique natural treasure of high ecological value and national importance is protected within the Natura 2000 network. The salt marsh is located between Sv. Katarina Bay and the Monastery of St. Nicholas and is a particular type of coast that is not steep, rocky or sandy, but rather muddy, wet and shallow. The area is extremely important as a habitat for many different bird species as well as rare and endangered salt plants. Therefore, the educational trail leads visitors through the area only on a wooden walkway.
This extraordinary and delicate swamp ecosystem can only be preserved if visitors observe all basic conservation goals and codes of conduct.

The salt marshes are home to a variety of saltwater-tolerant plants and rare birds. The wooden path was only completed in 2022!
The existing paths may only be passed on foot and dogs must be kept on a leash!
