Biel becomes a railway junction: 1st provisional train station from 1857 – 1864 at Zentralplatz. 2nd train station from 1864 – 1923 at General-Guisan-Platz. 3rd train station from 1923 at the current location. This means that Biel can finally become an industrial city.

The neoclassical Biel train station was built in 1923. There is a waiting room from this period that has remained unchanged. Furthermore, until 2010 it housed a practically unchanged train station buffet in Art Deco style, which was converted into a ticket hall as a result of the station renovation. Biel train station is one of the 10 largest Swiss train stations.

The train station is - unlike in other cities - far from the old town, near the shore of Lake Biel. This is because over time it was moved twice to the outskirts of the city where there was still enough open space. It was given the elevated position on the dam when the route was relocated, which began in 1919 and was completed in 1923.
