The Sahara near Ommen in the Overijssel Vechtdal is a 20-hectare sand drift. The area used to belong to the Eerde estate and in 1840 Baron van Pallandt ordered the creation of coniferous forests around the sand drifts. The baron wanted to prevent further atomization. What he could not have known at the time is that he had created a beautiful area by creating these coniferous forests.
