"In the beginning, people bathed respectably from bathing carts on the water's edge, but later also openly on the beach. The bathing carts were gradually replaced by bathing houses. They were intended for changing and staying, and these popular bathing houses are still set up every summer on Blokhus Beach. Bathing was done from a bathing house, and this was pulled by horse or by hand as far into the water as possible so that the bathers could step directly into the water. In this way, the bathers avoided having their bodies exposed too much, because the bathing suits showed an indecent amount of skin for the time."
