Handschuhsheim Castle / Ruins - Tiefburg Heidelberg 🚴‍♂️

The Tiefburg, also called Handschuhsheim Castle, is the ruin of a medieval moated castle in the Handschuhsheim district of Heidelberg, northwest of Baden-Württemberg. The castle is located in the former village center of Handschuhsheim and was once surrounded by a 12-meter-wide moat fed by the Mühlbach stream. When and by whom the Tiefburg was built is uncertain. It may have been constructed as a defensive structure in the early Middle Ages. Records from the 13th and 14th centuries indicate that it was a moated castle. The castle suffered severe damage during the Thirty Years' War.
The walled-up inlet to the moat is still visible at the northeast corner of the complex. The connecting canal was used as access to the neighboring estate after it was drained. The walling of the entire complex has been preserved in fragments on the surrounding properties. 🚴‍♂️

        The walled-in knightEdit

In 1770, the then owner of Tiefburg, Johann Ferdinand Joseph Freiherr von Helmstatt, discovered a walled-in skeleton in medieval armour in a cavity behind a wall. There are several legends surrounding this "walled-in knight". One of them says that the walled-in man had an affair with a resident of Hirschhorn Castle and was walled up alive as punishment.

The armour is said to have been given as a gift to the Elector Palatine General von Rothenhausen and later came to the royal antiquities collection in Munich via Elector Carl Theodor. The armour has since been lost. A replica donated by the local community association has adorned the site of the discovery since 1977.
